Some plant-based advocates argue that with proper meal planning and food selection, diabetics can meet all their nutritional needs through dietary sources alone. "If you're eating a wide variety of whole, minimally processed plant foods, you're likely getting a robust array of vitamins, minerals, and other beneficial compounds," says vegan nutrition expert, Dr. Samantha Cassetty. "Supplements should be viewed as a backup, not a requirement."

Key Nutrients to Consider for Plant-Based Diabetics:

- Vitamin B12: Crucial for red blood cell formation and nerve function. Found primarily in animal products.

- Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Offer anti-inflammatory benefits and support heart health. More abundant in fatty fish than plant sources.

- Calcium: Maintains bone health. Dairy products are a major source, but plant-based options like fortified plant milks and leafy greens can also provide calcium.

Ultimately, the decision to supplement a plant-based diet for diabetes management is a highly individualized one. Some may find that targeted supplementation helps them feel their best, while others may be able to meet all their needs through careful meal planning. The key is to work closely with a healthcare team to regularly assess nutrient status and make adjustments as needed.

"There's no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to managing diabetes through diet," concludes Markham. "The most important thing is finding a sustainable way of eating that helps you feel your healthiest. Whether that includes supplements or not is up to you and your provider to determine."
