Foot Protection - Importance and Tips
Foot Protection FAQ
What is foot protection?
Foot protection is any piece of personal protective equipment protecting one’s foot from any injury while at work or during movement. The foot is a vital part of our body and since we are on our feet constantly from day to day, they are more susceptible to injury. If a foot is injured, our movement may be temporarily or permanently restricted.
What is a foot protection service?
The foot protection service is usually based outside the hospital, for example, in a health centre or GP clinic. The foot protection service specialises in providing foot care for people with diabetes, preventing diabetic foot problems and dealing with foot problems that do not need to be treated in hospital.
Why is foot protection important in the workplace?
Foot protection is a critical aspect of workplace safety, especially in industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, education, and building services. Ensuring that your feet are adequately protected not only prevents injuries but also enhances overall job performance.
What are the different types of Foot Protection?
Commuting accidents: twisted ankles, slipping, tripping. Foot protection can basically be split into two categories: Work shoes and safety shoes. The difference is in the toe protection cap, which used to be mostly made of steel and nowadays is also made from aluminium or high-grade composite materials. Safety shoes have a cap; work shoes do not.
What is a diabetic foot protection service?
The foot protection service should be led by a podiatrist (someone trained to look after your feet; sometimes called a chiropodist) with special training in dealing with diabetic foot problems. The multidisciplinary foot care service is usually based at a hospital. It specialises in treating more severe diabetic foot problems.
What if a patient was referred to a foot protection team?
If a patient was referred to, or under the care of a foot protection team the communication and appropriate onward referral needs to be mapped to determine if this was timely, appropriate and followed NICE guidance.
Who should I see if I have a foot problem?
If you do have a foot problem, or if the foot check shows that you have a moderate or high risk of a problem developing, you may be referred to see another healthcare professional. This may be someone in the foot protection service or the multidisciplinary foot care service.
