What is ketoacidosis?

Ketoacidosis is a pathological state of uncontrolled production of ketones that results in a metabolic acidosis, with serum ketone levels typically in excess of 3 mM.

What is the difference between nutritional ketosis and ketoacidosis?

In nutritional ketosis, BHB levels typically remain below 5 mmol/L. However, people in diabetic ketoacidosis often have BHB levels of 10 mmol/L or above, which is directly related to their inability to produce insulin. This graph shows the vast difference in the amount of ketones in the blood between ketosis and ketoacidosis:

What triggers ketosis?

Drastically reducing calorie and carb intake, exercising for extended periods, or being pregnant may trigger ketosis. Although some people choose to put the body through ketosis, the risk of increased acid levels can be dangerous in those who are not controlling it.

What are the symptoms of ketosis?

One of the signs of ketosis may include “keto flu,” which includes symptoms such as upset stomach, headache and fatigue. Other symptoms of ketosis may include: Bad breath (“keto” breath). Constipation. Insomnia. Dehydration. Low bone density ( osteopenia) and bone fractures. High cholesterol ( hyperlipidemia ). Kidney stones.
