That said, it's important to note that the choice between metformin and sulfonylureas should be tailored to the individual patient's needs, medical history, and preferences. Factors such as age, weight, kidney function, and the presence of other medical conditions can all play a role in determining the most appropriate treatment approach.
So, which is more effective in managing type 2 diabetes? Based on the available evidence, metformin appears to have a slight edge over sulfonylureas in terms of HbA1c reduction and long-term cardiovascular benefits. However, sulfonylureas may still be a viable option, particularly for patients who cannot tolerate or do not respond well to metformin.
